Without question, 3-D technology has come a long way since the days of red and green cardboard glasses, and Alien Adventure offers ample proof. This roughly 30-minute feature--also available in The Ultimate 3-D Collection, which includes two other films and the H3D "i-glasses" hardware needed to generate the 3-D imaging--tells the story of alien pioneers inadvertently discovering Earth through a high-tech amusement park. The story is mindless, but the sense of depth conveyed here is quite convincing, especially during the many point-of-view sequences. The image and color resolution of the digital animation leaves much to be desired, however, proving unrewarding in 2-D.

That said, certain sequences shine, most notably a lengthy slide through an arctic wonderland of vast nighttime icescapes and narrow roads through head-spinning chasms. The sound is well above average, enhancing the sense of real-life depth with seamless DTS surround mixes that work well even in headphones. --Michael Mikesell

Zentrix 1 - 3D Action Adventure: Out of Time Specifications

Although it already aired in Japan, Zentrix was animated in Hong Kong and is being presented with only the English voice track (and no extras). Zentrix is the perfect city of 2088, run by Emperor Jarad's ultimate robot, Omycronpsy. But when the six cyberchips that form Omycronpsy's mind become unstable, the Emperor goes back in time seven years to prevent the creation of the robot. His daughter Megan follows him, with Mango, her dinosaur-toy-playmate, and super-robot Zeus as companions. Megan wanders through the past, trying to find the six hidden cyberchips and disable them, with some help from people she befriends along the way.

Key elements of the story are left unexplained: why does Megan go from 15 to eight when she travels through time? Why would Omycronpsy blow up an undersea fortress that contains one of his vital chips? The main characters all seem to have come from animation's equivalent of Central Casting: Omycronpsy laughs maniacally and derides his underlings as fools, Megan remains determinedly spunky, etc. Clutches of cutesy side characters repeatedly halt the plot in its tracks. (The Peach-Wigis in episode 3 look like a Jolly Green Giant commercial gone wrong.) The low-budget computer animation never conveys a sense of weight; the characters gesticulate furiously, but fail to convey credible thoughts and emotions. The bright colors of Zentrix may divert small children for a little while, but their older siblings will quickly grow restless. (Rated 7 and older: robot vs. robot violence) --Charles Solomon

For the child who knows the difference between a diplodocus and an apatosaurus (or for the adult who remembers a youthful obsession with dinosaurs), National Geographic's Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure will be a delight. This 40-minute special explores the less-familiar world of the prehistoric oceans, filled with predatory Platecarpi, gentle Protostegas, and cold-eyed Xiphactini. The story follows a newborn Dolichorhynchops (a short-necked plesiosaur that looks a little like a dolphin crossed with the Loch Ness Monster) as she matures into adolescence and adulthood, surviving encounters with sharks and the fearsome Tylosaurus, who's sort of the T-Rex of the deep. Juxtaposed with these vivid CGI recreations are staged depictions of paleontological digs throughout the 20th century that unveiled the bones of these ancient deep-sea beasties. The partnership with NASA and IMAX films continues with a tour of the next step in space exploration: the International Space Station (ISS). Sixteen countries helped build this giant station (still being built upon the film's release in 2004). We see the first building blocks being constructed, including shots from inside the slick NASA shuttle launches to the friendly informalities of the Russian program. The crystal-clear pictures of the station and the Earth are the best aspects of this film. The entertaining footage delivers human elements, but sometimes the carefulness of experimentation makes for boring photography; a test of a super-cool jet pack has the astronaut moving mere inches. To the film's benefit, the narrator is Tom Cruise with a script tailored to his strong suits (the first line of "What an incredible sight!" is vintage Cruise). The film is also so light on its feet with a nice dose of music, including "Up on the Roof" and the Talking Heads "Naive Melody," that it makes up for the staginess of some of the scenes. The film was shown in 3-D in theaters but only 2-D for home video. --Doug Thomas

Without question, 3-D technology has come a long way since the days of red and green cardboard glasses, and The Ultimate 3-D Collection is ample proof. Included in the set are three roughly 30-minute animated features (Alien Adventure, Encounter in the Third Dimension, and Haunted Castle) and the H3D "i-glasses" hardware you need to enjoy them: a small processing box to insert between your DVD player and your TV, two sets of viewing goggles, and all the cabling you need to put it together. By and large, the sense of real depth conveyed by each feature is astoundingly convincing, especially during the many point-of-view fantasy sequences; crags and dinosaur limbs seem to jut halfway between the screen and your viewing position. Be warned, though, that the discs' image and color resolutions vary from poor (Alien Adventure) to mediocre (Encounter in the Third Dimension) to quite good (Haunted Castle).

Encounter, originally produced to showcase "large-format" 3-D (i.e., a towering IMAX screen), features fun snippets of old films and even a few stereographic still photos. None of these fills the screen or lasts very long, however, and the process reverts to standard 2-D imaging in pause mode. While more live-action footage would have been great, Haunted Castle is a real treat. The only disc with an actual story line (a rock & roll reworking of the Faust tale, with credible music to boot), Haunted Castle creates the most convincing sense of depth through real-life elements like trees and torches. The sound on all discs is excellent, enhancing the sense of depth with seamless DTS surround mixes that work well even in headphones. This is an impressive set, and with 3-D technology this good, there's a strong chance the included goggles and processor will see more 3-D action going forward. --Michael Mikesell
